The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced on Friday, October 27 the next round of Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) funding for Safety Action Plan and Demonstration Grants going to cities, counties, planning organizations, and Tribal communities in 42 states and Puerto Rico. This year’s funding adds to last year’s total of $800 million awarded to 511 communities, making SS4A one of the US Department’s largest competitive programs in terms of awardees. Additional funding announcements for Planning and Demonstration Grants and Implementation Grants are expected in December of 2023.

“The ability for communities to focus solely on improving safety, making the implementation of Vision Zero goals finally attainable, is invaluable,” said Alta National Roadway Safety Lead Jeremy Chapman. “The further ability to have funding to demonstrate some of these ideas through immediate project action will cement that idea within their local populations and show that this isn’t just another plan going onto a shelf in an office somewhere.”

New to this round of planning funding is the inclusion of the first set of Demonstration Grants along with the Safety Action Plan Grants.

Demonstration grants represent an expansion of the previous Supplemental Grants and allow for a wider range of uses of this funding with a specific focus on building temporary bicycle and pedestrian facilities as a part of larger outreach efforts, so communities can see and experience the options for safer travel.

These grants also support or enhance an existing action plan and can include initiatives that focus on vulnerable road users, road safety audits, additional safety and equity analyses, and safety campaigns.

Applications for the FY24 SS4A Notice of Funding Opportunity are anticipated to open in February 2024.
