How Sweet Trails Alabama is Connecting 67 Counties Through a Statewide Trail Network

Contact: Matt Hayes, Principal, Alta

During a time of division in the U.S., we’d like to celebrate a story about unity. Sweet Trails Alabama is a groundbreaking project that will connect all 67 counties in Alabama via a statewide trail system that spans 7,847 miles, and residents from the Appalachians to those along the Gulf of Mexico are working together to make it happen.

A Vision of Connection

Sweet Trails Alabama builds upon previous and existing initiatives by Innovate Alabama, Alabama Trails Commission, Alabama Trails Foundation, and other local and regional trail organizations to create a comprehensive master plan guiding future trail planning and implementation. Released this summer, the public draft of the plan aims to provide every resident the opportunity to access and explore the state’s parks, cities, national forests, and historic sites.

The plan maps existing trails and lays the groundwork for a cohesive network that connects communities and cultural destinations across the state. By focusing on hiking, biking, paddling, horseback riding, and OHV/ATV riding, the project emphasizes accessibility and safety and takes into account the diversity of possible trail use.

Why Trails Matter

One of the project’s goals is to preserve and celebrate Alabama’s unique natural and cultural heritage. The state is home to several ongoing trail initiatives, including the Red Rock Trail System, Pinhoti Trail, Chief Ladiga Trail, Singing River Trail, and more. But Sweet Trails Alabama isn’t just about recreation; it’s also a vital component of the state’s economic strategy.

Trails enhance the quality of life, attract businesses, and promote tourism. In fact, many major employers consider outdoor amenities essential for attracting talent and families. By improving trail connectivity, Sweet Trails Alabama aims to bolster Alabama’s outdoor recreation economy, showcasing the state as a premier destination for residents and visitors alike.

Finding Common Ground

Creating a trail network that caters to diverse communities across Alabama requires effective communication and collaboration. The team prioritized engagement with residents from all walks of life. By listening to their visions, ideas, and concerns, the team was able to better understand the varying needs of trail users and foster excitement about the project’s benefits.

But how do you meaningfully reach residents in all 67 counties? Led by Alta Principal Matt Hayes, the team embarked on a statewide tour in October 2023 and met with 282 leaders and stakeholders. Their conversations gave insight into the types of trails communities want and need. Despite Alabama ranking low in bike and walk-friendly environments (for now), nearly 80 percent of residents expressed that trails were essential to their quality of life.

Next Steps in the Journey

From November 2023 to February 2024, the team conducted a statewide inventory of existing trails and evaluated where new connections could be made. The goal was to enhance what was already in place, ensuring that communities benefit from a well-integrated network.

After extensive engagement with thousands of residents, the final trails plan is in the process of being finalized. Next steps include conducting feasibility studies and identifying new sources of federal, state, private, and local funding.

Sweet Trails Alabama is more than just a trail plan; it’s a testament to the power of community and organizational collaboration, a celebration of Alabama’s rich cultural and natural heritage, and a strategic initiative to promote economic growth. This project demonstrates that we can find common ground, even in challenging times, by embracing what connects us.
