A successful community meeting, held at the historic Liberty Theater in Astoria last week, gave the community a chance to comment on proposed pedestrian and bicycle projects. Astoria is one of Oregon’s oldest settlements and is located on the northern Oregon coast at the mouth of the Columbia River. It is experiencing a revival in its downtown and there are a number of unique destinations that draw tourists during the warm summer months. Many of the recommendations we have developed are geared toward improving destination wayfinding and pedestrian/bicyclist circulation in the downtown. Unfortunately, the community has recently experienced a number of pedestrian crashes and concerns about pedestrian safety were at the forefront of people‟s minds. It was great to demonstrate how the proposed crossing projects in the draft TSP would help to improve visibility at intersections and make them more comfortable for pedestrians.
